После последнего извержения высота Ключевской сопки составила 4835 м. Возраст вулкана сравнительно молодой-7 тысяч лет назад он образовался и до сих пор продолжает расти. Расположена сопка 60 км от Берингова моря. Относится к группе Ключевских вулканов. Ближайший населённый пункт-посёлок Ключи, который находится на расстоянии 45 км от сопки. Считается, что своё название вулкан получил, благодаря этой близости с посёлком и рекой Ключевка. Раньше вулкан являлся объектом поклонения у коренных жителей. Они считали, что он был центром, точкой отсчета, с которой Бог начал создавать весь наш мир. Господь крутил материю, а Ключевской был его веретеном. Этим и объяснялась идеальная конусовидная форма вулкана. ЮНЕСКО также считает его особенным и включил Ключевской вулкан в список природного Всемирного наследия человечества.
